Bunmahon
The descendants of Patrick Beresford and his son Thomas
Patrick 1749-1831. Married Ellen Moloney 1761-1818.
Patrick was the younger brother of John Beresford (born Deelish 1740, died Annestown 1813) We know little about Patrick’s life. He is buried at Garranbane church, gravestone shown above. Patrick’s descendants lived in Bonmahon, – there was one son Thomas (Bonmahon) 1789 -1865. His wife is Anna 1799-1879. Anna is also shown as Anastasia in Bunmahon mining documents of 1871
Thomas lived in the mining area of Templeyvrick, Bonmahon. He appears in various valuation documents around 1850. In 1847, Thomas is show as renting a ground floor for use as a bread shop, house #38 at Templeyvrick, Bonmahon.
In the Griffith Valuations of 1851. Thomas is shown as residing in Templeyvrick, a 31-year rental on a street house. He also leased farmland in the area. In 1856, Thomas has a Public House. (Slaters Commercial Directory 1856)
When Thomas died in 1865, his occupation is listed as Spirit Dealer. Honora Reily was present at his passing. (Waterford death register 1864-1901)
Thomas had two daughters. Johanna 1838-1858, died age 20. And Hanora, 1840-1870.
Honora married Peter Cooney. Peter lived locally at Kildwan and at Knockmahon.
They had a son Michael Cooney in 1869.
Hanora died 1870 and Peter Cooney married Hanora Reily in 1871.
They had children four children between 1871 and 1875. Mary, Edward, John, and Thomas.
The male family line of this Beresford branch seems to have come to an end locally in 1865. We continue to search for further information in print and in DNA. At this time, we have no DNA traces for Patrick or his descendants.
Before the arrival of Ancestry DNA, many family history charts show Patrick as the “first male” on their charts. This is entirely understandable.
However, this is unlikely to be correct, there are no known DNA links to the descendants.
Also the timing and ages doesn’t work, Patrick’s wife Ellen Moloney was born in 1761, making it impossible for Ellen to be the mother of Nicholas1 (Deelish/Castlequarter) born 1767.
This is a fascinating family branch, and we would welcome any further knowledge and insights.
