Deelish

The descendants of Nicholas Beresford and his son Phillip.

we all come from Deelish !

The descendants of Nicholas Beresford 1767-1815 and Ellen O'Connor 1763-1854

Nicholas1 was the first son of John Beresford. John was born in Deelish 1740, died in Annestown 1813.

The date of Nicholas’s marriage to Ellen O’Conner is not known at this time. The immediate descendants of Nicholas and Ellen gave rise to the Deelish, Syracuse, Kilaadangan and Castlequarter lines. In further generations, Coolnagour  was derived from the Castlequarter line.

Shared DNA matches exists between the descendants of John and Nicholas1 and all the descendant lines of Nicholas’s brothers.

Nicholas and Ellen held land at Balintoor, Deelish and Deelish Mountain in mid 1850 and had a family of two sons. Nicholas and Ellen are buried at the Garranbane church.

SYRACUSE. Their second son John Thomas Beresford married Catherine Daley from Cork. Catherine was living at Kilbarrymeaden village. There are conflicting dates for this couple. However, their descendants in SYRACUSE NY are well known and detailed. Their daughter Catherine Beresford was born I Dec 1856 and died 1928 at 205 Dudley St Syracuse, New York. (The original house is still standing!) She married Thomas Bulger. Daughter Mary Bulger born 1885 married Homer Osborne and their grandchildren are the Reid and Taylor families in Syracuse.

Phillip Beresford married around 1832 to Johanna Cheasty. At this time, we know little about Johanna.     They were very successfull and had a large family of ten children. They set the foundations for the family descendants for many generations.

There is a death register entry for Phillip Beresford of Deelish “died 2 May 1889 aged 80. Married farmer. Margaret daughter present”. The three youngest children William, Henry and Peter are shown as baptised in Kilgobinet 1849-1853. The registers at Kilgobinet started in 1848.

The descendants of Phillip and Johanna are detailed below.

The descendants of James Beresford 1833-1913 and Johanna Mulcahy 1841-1910

James was the second son of Phillip Beresford and Johanna Cheasty.

His marriage to Johanna Mulcahy is recorded at Touraneena , nov 1864.

James was known locally as “Seamus Phil Rou”, James Phillip the red-haired man.

He inherited the farm at Deelish and had a large family, all baptised at Kilgobinet Church

Their children were

 Phillip 1866                                       William 1874

John 1867                                          Joanna 1876

Ellen 1868                                         James 1879

Marg 1870                                        Nano 1879 twins

Mary 1872

We know very little about Phillip born 1866.

John born 1867 moved to Kiladangan and his family prospered there . See Kiladangan branch

 William 1874-1954 inherited the farm.

In the Census 1911, James and Johanna are on the farm, with their son William,

aged 37 and Johanna aged 34.

There is a marriage of William Beresford to Bridget Lenehan, October 1917.

This could be the above William, would be aged 43.

In the last generation, James Beresford2 lived at the farm in 2006.

I understood that William was his father.

James2 1924-2009 is buried at Garranbane Church.
