This family branch starts with James Beresford, born ~1770 at Deelish, near Dungarvan.

James was the second son of John Beresford 1740-1813. John was born at Deelish, died at Woodstown, Annestown.

We have a record of James living in Deelish in July 1794.

James married Mary White in Kilgobinet around 1794, and they had four children while living in the Parish of Kilgobinet.

  • Phillip was born in 1795
  • Nicholas was born in 1798
  • James was born in 1804
  • Pierce was born in 1808

James and Mary moved to Powerstown in 1810. Powerstown is located about 3 Km on the north east side of the city of Clonmel, Tipperary.

They had two children at Powerstown

  • John was born in 1815
  • Henry was born in 1817

James and Mary moved locally to the Rathronan area at some time – shown there in the Tithes of 1827. Mary is shown as Widowed at Rathronan in 1846.  We have not located the burial location of James and Mary Beresford.     The search continues.

 Most of the family of James and Mary Beresford married locally and have been identified.

 Phillip Beresford born 1795, married Mary Keary in 1820 in Powerstown, (various spellings of the name, Carey, Carew) and had a family of five children.

  • Patrick, born in 1834
  • Margaret, born in 1836.

Phillip is in the Tithes 1827 in the townland of Lawestown, house on 10 acres.

Nicholas Beresford, born1798, married Ellen Looby in 1822 in Powerstown and had two children.

  • William 1 born in 1824
  • William 2 born in 1826

Nicholas is in the Tithes 1827 in the townland of Lawlestown, house on 13 acres.

 James Beresford born 1804, married Ellen Morrissey in 1830 in Powerstown and had three children.

  • Nicholas born in 1831
  • Mary born in 1832
  • James born in 1834

James is in the Tithes 1827 in the townland of Ardgeehy, house on15 acres.

James is cited in a coronial inquest in Clonmel in April 1840

 Pierce Beresford born 1808, married Mary Ryan in 1836 in Powerstown and had two children.

  • Mary Ann born in 1838, baptised at St Johns Parish Waterford City.
  • William born 1844, baptised at Powerstown.

 There are large gaps between this generation and today.

 Michael Beresford, born 1823, died New York 1881.

  • Had son Henry Thomas in New York 1858-1934.

 Patrick Beresford, born Powerstown 1834

He married Johanna O’Mara 1835-1863, father Thomas O’Mara, mother Ellen Hickey

  • The 1860 census in Albany NY – two children Thomas 1858-1934 and Mary Anastasia born 1860.
  • Johanna died young, age 28
  • Children were raised by their grandmother Ellen O’Mara, nee Hickey
  • Thomas married Jane Bernard and settled in New York city.
  • Ongoing research on this family.
